The Magnesium/Vitamin D Connection

Magnesium and Vitamin D are not independent. If you don’t get adequate amounts of one nutrient, it can impact the levels and function of the other.

  • Vitamin D supports magnesium absorption — If you are taking a magnesium supplement, but you don’t get enough Vitamin D, your magnesium level may remain low.
  • Magnesium is required for Vitamin D activation — Whether it’s due to sunlight or nutrition, Vitamin D must be modified into its active form for full benefits. The enzymes that convert Vitamin D to this active form require magnesium to function.
  • Vitamin D relies on magnesium for transportation in the blood — Almost all Vitamin D in the blood is delivered to parts of the body by a protein called the Vitamin D-Binding Protein. This protein requires magnesium to function.

So with these two nutrients, the right hand needs to know what the left hand is doing! They truly depend on each other!
