THE NEW YORK STRIP VS. THE RIBEYE:

From Frank VanderSloot

I have been blown away with the excitement around Riverbend Ranch Black Label Beef! With already tens of thousands of subscribers, I am often asked whether I recommend the Ribeye bundle or the New York Strip bundle. My answer: Both are great steaks! But I much prefer the New York Strip because it has just as much marbling and flavor but has less fat. The Ribeye has a vein of fat that extends up through the middle of the Ribeye. That’s why many prefer the New York Strip. The New York Strip is also a more appropriate portion size for most people. It also has less calories!

I am not alone. Many steak lovers choose the New York Strip. Those who want the flavor without the extra fat are happier with the New York Strip! Fortunately, my preferences also align with Belinda’s. She loves the flavor of a well-marbled steak, but she doesn’t like seeing extra fat on her beef. Therefore, she greatly prefers the New York Strip as well. She believes that many women have the same preference. I think she is right about that, like she is on so many things!

Start Your Morning Off Right

Start Your Morning Morning Off Right With This Blood Orange Smoothie Recipe

Blood Orange and Banana Smoothies are such a great way to start off your mornings! The pretty pop of color will keep moods high, and the Vitamin C can help shorten the length of time you suffer from an inevitable cold. Blood oranges are closer to red than orange on the inside, and it’s those darker pigments that make them higher in antioxidants than regular oranges.

Blood oranges range in color on the inside from pinkish to ruby red to, well, blood red. On the outside, the skin has a bit of a maroon-ish hue. As far as flavor goes, you won’t mistake these for something other than oranges.

Hydration is key

Hydration is key during these hot summer days we are facing. Water is essential but you must be sure you are getting all four of your electrolytes as well, but minus too much sugar. My company has a great hydration drink.

Not only a great hydration drink. It has a lot less sugar than the big box stores, it costs less and it tastes great!

The Dangers of Aspartame

Artificial sweeteners in general are something to look at very carefully, but of all of them, Aspartame is the absolute worst! It is found in almost all diet sodas and zero calorie drinks like Crystal Light. It’s also known as Equal, found at your tables in your restaurants. In the 1980s, it was touted as the “healthier” replacement for the banned artificial sweetener, cyclamate.

You’ve probably heard about some side-effects, headaches and migraines, but did you know ALL of the dangers? I surely didn’t!

1. Eye Problems. Aspartame is made up of phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol. The methanol is claimed to be potentially toxic to your retina and optic nerve, causing several forms of eye issues. It can cause dry eye, eye pain, and blurred vision as well.

2.  Diabetes. Some studies suggest that aspartame might decrease insulin sensitivity. A study done by the American Diabetes Association raises concerns that diabetics who eat meals with aspartame before exercise may see a drop in glucose levels.

3. Enhances Mood Disorders. Studies have shown that aspartame has adverse side effects on people who suffer from depression. It can enhance mood disorders. One notable study was even stopped prematurely because the effects were so severe. If you suffer from, or have a history of depression, your doctor should be aware of your diet, including any diet foods that contain aspartame.

4. Inflammation and Joint Pain. There have been several reports of joint pain and inflammation after consuming aspartame. It’s believed that many people are allergic to it—your body tries to protect itself from the chemical compounds found in the sweetener, resulting in an allergic reaction. Your soft tissues can become inflamed, causing pain and discomfort.

5. Hearing Problems. Several scientific studies, including studies by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), report that aspartame negatively impacts vestibular and cochlear functioning, which can begin with tinnitus (or a chronic ringing in the ears) and gradually develop into high frequency hearing loss.

6. Controversial Cancer Studies. Non-government funded studies show the link between aspartame and more specifically, to brain tumors. Even though two studies published by a group of Italian researchers (and cited by the American Cancer Association) link high levels of aspartame consumption to a heightened risk of certain blood-related cancers (i.e., lymphomas and leukemias) in rats, the FDA states that important data is lacking.

Is it really worth the risk?

The Best Laundry Detergents Avoid Toxic Ingredients

Most laundry detergents have toxic ingredients such as 1,4 dioxane (causes cancer), SLS/SLES, parabens, phosphates, sulfates, synthetic dyes, optical brighteners, & more. Your laundry detergent gets absorbed into your body through your skin (your largest organ) so it’s important to avoid these ingredients.

Brands like All, Seventh Generation, Tide, Persil, Gain, Earthbreeze, Arm & Hammer, Charlie’s Soap, and Nellies contain some these ingredients and much more.  When these brands were evaluated, the testers used twi criteria: (1) clean ingredients (we want to avoid dangerous chemicals) and (2) cleaning power (we don’t want to compromise on effectiveness) . My favorite laundry detergent is made from safe, natural, and plant-based ingredients. It is effective at cleaning and eliminating odors – and it doesn’t contain dangerous chemicals, optical brighteners, sulfates, phosphates, parabens, chlorine, or synthetic dyes (that works for me!)

For the past year I have been starting my day with lemon water.

As this infographic shows, lemon water is great at helping to flush the toxins!

Collagen Boost

It’s a happy day for me.After my weight loss, my skin looked all “wrinkly” especially on my upper arms and legs.

You know, the skin right above your knees? Well, today, I noticed that the skin on my upper legs is smoother and tighter!

Could it be? Could it be the Collagen Boost making the difference in a month? It’s amazing! It’s working!
I haven’t changed anything else! I’m still following R3, exercising almost daily, drinking lots of water, taking Peak Performance Total Longevity! My upper arms are looking better too.

I know it’s the Collagen Boost! I’m a believer!

Did you know that as we age, we need to increase the amount of protein we consume every day?

In fact, once you reach your 60s, you might want to begin upping the amount of protein you consume per day in an effort to maintain muscle mass and strength, bone health and other essential physiological functions.

An increase in protein is necessary because older bodies process protein less efficiently, so even healthy adults in their 60s need more protein than when they were younger to help preserve muscle mass. By the time people reach age 65, they become at greater risk of sarcopenia which is the loss of muscle mass, strength and function.

Nutrition experts recommend 69 to 81 grams of protein for a 150-pound woman, and 81 to 98 grams for a 180-pound man.

I like to have a protein shake for lunch and fill my blender with berries, a banana, spinach and my fiber mix. It’s yummy and I get a big dose of protein AND fiber at the same time!

I just can’t stress it enough……and it’s actually one of the easier things we can do for our bodies.

  • Start your day with a little bit of protein, like a hard boiled egg
  • Strive for a minimum of 45 grams of protein/day for women, 55 grams for men
  • As we age, we need to increase that minimum to closer to 60 grams for women and 70 grams for men.
